Learning to knit is one of the most challenging things to do with two hands. Holding two telephone poles tightly and negotiating an endless piece of yarn between them, without losing or gaining stitches... ugh, makes you wonder if it is worth the toil.
Have you learned to knit? Do you still knit? Can you remember how you learned to knit? Have you ever tried to teach someone else to knit?
So many questions, but I know one thing and that is that it looks much easier than it is.
When you look at other peoples lives, it seems like everything falls into place like a well knitted sweater. No loose ends. No gaping holes. No stitches that got lost along the way. Wow, look at the fancy cables and assortment of colours.
What you don't see is the hard work that went into it. Long hours of work, rrrrrrrrr... the sound of undoing so much when you realised you made a mistake, trying again and again and again, until it is right. Makes you wonder if it is worth the time and effort?
You may never learn to knit, but life has its own challenges. Sometimes you lose some stitches along the way. Then you have to go back, repair or start again, because leaving it as is, will only make it worse. Is it worth the sweat and tears? You decide.
You gain a skill by doing what you need to do again and again and again. Learning from your mistakes, remembering what to do, how to do it and when, until it is second nature. It may be tough at first, but mastering the art of doing it right makes it worth while, whether it is knitting or living your life.
Have you seen the experienced knitters? Knitting away like machines, having a conversation while their hands never stop, increasing and decreasing stitches without blinking. They make it look so easy and so can you.
